CORVID-19 is still with us even though most restrictions have been relaxed in Scotland. The risks of infection are lower if outside, there is still a risk if mixing in large groups. Even so, please do not go out in the Cairngorms, or anywhere else, if you are showing signs of Corvid-19 and when out walking make sure you give people space - 1m at least and preferable 2m. Remember that if it feels too crowded then you can walk away and try somewhere else, the hills will still be there tomorrow. Also remember the MRT. They will come out to rescue you but they should not have to put themselves into danger from this virus.

A number of these routes start and finish at the main Cairngorm car park. Currently there is significant building work being undertaken in repairing the funicular. The site is fenced off to keep people out but there are routes across the work for walkers. Please keep out of this dangerous building site and follow the contractor's instructions.

summary : Car Park Glen Muick - Broad Cairn - Carn Bannoch - Car Park Glen Muick
distance : 20.0km.
ascent : 1010m.
time taken : 7hr. 50min.

There are four Munros west of Lochnagar and East of Glen Shee. These are close together and as such can be climbed in a singgle, long, route. This route climbs the two most accessible from Glen Muick. It is possible to climb these hills in a horseshoe via Dubh Loch but the ground between the end of the stalkers path and the summit of Cairn Bannoch is very wet and to be avoided in anything but dry conditions.

There is a large car park at the end of the Glem Muich. It is a large car park but still is busy due to the popularity of the hills here.

A well worn track takes the walker from the car park and then onto the south shore of Loch Muick. At around half way the ptrack ascends steeply. This is followed all the way until it reaches open hillside. The track follows the ridge and makes it's way up the slopes of Broad Cairn. It does become a stalkers track here but is still followed to 30m from the summit. The track skirts around the hill and the walker wants to continue directly to the summit. (9kms. 810m. 4hrs. 20min.)

Continue in a westerly direction form the summit until the stalkers path is reached again. This can be followed for som 0.5km until it dissappears out. No matter, the route follows the wide south-south-east ridge of Cairn Bannoch to the summit. (2.0kms. 200m. 1hrs. 0min.)

Descent is largely by the uphill route. Retrace the route down from Carn Bannoch to find the start of the stalkers track. This is followed all the way to reach the high track, no need to ascend Broad cairn again. Follow this high above Loch Muich and then it descends steeply to the Loch and back to the car park. (9.0kms. 00m. 2hrs. 40min.)
